Burt and Brian Frisselle have chosen to support two organizations through their opportunities in racing, Camp Boggy Creek and The Lupus Foundation of America.
Co-founded by actor/racer Paul Newman and General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, Camp Boggy Creek serves children ages 7-16 dealing with chronic or life threatening illnesses at no cost to them or their families. Since opening its doors in 1996, over 28,000 children and their family members have been served. Because there is no charge to the children or families, Camp Boggy Creek relies on the generous support of individuals, corporations and foundations.
The camp deals with more than 15 medical illnesses including cancer, diabetes, spina bifida, immunology, asthma, heart, epilepsy, sickle cell, rheumatic, lupus and others. While its state of the art medical facility allows these seriously ill children to come to Camp, the medical presence is kept low key and behind the scenes with nurses and doctors moving easily among the campers dispensing the necessary medications and treatments.
Located in central Florida, Camp Boggy Creek operates year round with nine week-long summer sessions for campers only, and 20 family weekends when the camper brings his or her whole family. From early morning fishing, to swimming, archery, horseback riding, arts & crafts, climbing tower, miniature golf to Silly Olympics, Dance Night, Theater Day and closing campfire… Camp Boggy Creek provides a life enhancing experience to some of the bravest children you’ll ever meet.
Burt Frisselle made his first visit to Camp Boggy Creek in July of 2004, when he and then teammate Oswaldo Negri Jr. were racing at Daytona International Speedway. Camp Boggy Creek is a proud sponsor of Grand American Road Racing, and welcomes visits from drivers. The camp and the children he met there left such an impression on Burt, that he and brother Brian Frisselle have made Camp Boggy Creek their primary charity focus. Both brothers had the opportunity to visit the camp while at the Daytona Test Days in January of 2006, and enjoyed seeing the updates the camp has made for its 2006 campers. "Camp Boggy Creek is a truly special place," Burt comments. "The counselors create such a positive, fun atmosphere for the campers, giving them the chance to just be kids." Brian adds, "Both Burt and I are excited to continue to visit Camp Boggy Creek at every opportunity, as we both feel strongly about the wonderful work being done there." Both drivers have pledged that a portion of their future earnings will be donated to the foundation.
Burt and Brian Frisselle also extend their support to The Lupus Foundation of America due to its personal relevance. Their older sister, Stephanie, has Lupus, so Burt and Brian have witnessed first hand the difficulties that are a part of living with a chronic illness.
Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that can affect various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood, and kidneys. In an autoimmune disorder such as lupus, the immune system launches an attack against the body, causing inflammation, injury to tissues, and pain. It is estimated that 500,000 to 1.5 million Americans have been diagnosed and live with lupus.
The Lupus Foundation of America is a nationwide voluntary organization that serves Lupus patients, their families, physicians, researchers, and the general public. Its mission is to educate and support those affected by lupus and to find the cure. Since its establishment in 1977, the LFA has remained a volunteer-driven organization with an extensive national network of chapters, branches, support groups, and International Associated Groups.
"We feel strongly about the work being done by The Lupus Foundation of America to support those with Lupus and to find a cure," Burt comments. "Our sister has Lupus, so we understand the challenges of living with a chronic illness. It is very important to us to support this foundation in their crucial work," adds Brian. Each driver has pledged that a portion of his future earnings be donated to The Lupus Foundation of America.
